Japanese Newspapers File Lawsuit Against Perplexity for Copyright Infringement

Japanese newspapers Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun have filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence firm Perplexity, alleging that the firm infringed on copyright and used their content in its artificial intelligence model offerings.

Both newspapers say Perplexity is aggregating and using their articles and content without permission. This is also seen as one of the first times that publishers in Japan have taken the step of filing a lawsuit against an artificial intelligence service provider.

According to the lawsuit filed, it is said that Perplexity has violated the technical limits allowed for the use of content, as well as accessing Nikkei's servers to aggregate articles. It also then produced a summary and distributed it, thus violating the copyright act in Japan.

Not only that, Perplexity is also said to not offer an accurate summary. This has also negatively affected the reputation of both newspapers, when the summary is also placed as a source to Nikkei or Asahi.
