Micron, a technology company well-known for producing their memory and storage semiconductor chips, has introduced their latest storage offering that uses PCIe 6.0 data transmission technology. This storage was shown in the middle of this year, and now its full specifications have been revealed.
Named Micron 9650, this SSD series comes in two model options, Micron 9650 Pro and Micron 9650 Max. This SSD storage is developed using 276-layer 3D TLC NAND memory chips, and each SSD model built has a data read speed of 28GB/s and a data write speed of 14GB/s.
The Pro model comes with storage options from 7.68TB to 30.7TB, while the Max model comes with storage options from 6.4TB to 25.6TB. The difference that can be seen is that the Max model comes with higher endurance than the Pro model, especially because of the focus on different usage patterns.
The Micron 9650 is specifically designed for data centers that require storage with fast data read and write speeds, such as AI data centers and supercomputers used to perform various types of calculations. In comparison, PCIe 5.0 SSDs come with data read speeds as fast as 13-14GB/s, compared to the 28GB/s shown in this new storage.
Meanwhile, Micron also showed off the Micron 6600 ION storage, which comes with up to 245TB of storage in a single SSD storage, suitable for data centers that store data, but still need fast data read speeds to access this data.
Test samples for the Micron 9650 storage are currently being shipped to customers for testing, while test samples of the Micron 6600 ION will ship in the third or fourth quarter of this year.
