NASA to Announce Plan to Accelerate Development of Nuclear Power Plant on the Moon

The acceleration of nuclear technology development to provide sufficient electricity for the benefit of the world is nothing new. In fact, Malaysia also has plans to develop a nuclear power plant that is expected to be operational starting in 2031.

This week, NASA, through Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who is also the interim administrator of the US space agency, is reported to be announcing plans to build a nuclear power plant on the moon.

Plans to build a power supply source on the moon are nothing new. NASA technically had plans to do so before, but various funding cuts meant that the plan had to be shelved for now.

A report by Politico further states that the US government is looking for companies that can develop a plant with a 100kW energy production capacity and promises that it will be operational by 2030.

Previously, NASA has come up with a plan to build a nuclear power plant with a 40KW energy generation output on the surface of the moon called the Fission Surface Power Project together with companies such as Lockheed Martin, Westinghouse and IX.

This latest plant plan seems to be seen as a step to accelerate the development process of the plant, not only to supply power for settlements on the surface of the moon, but also to provide additional power supply for spacecraft that will depart for the planet Mars.
