President Donald Trump announced that the United States will impose a 100% tariff on chip and semiconductor imports. According to him, the only way to avoid these tariffs is for manufacturing companies to produce chips and semiconductors in the United States.
When these excessive tariffs will be enforced has not yet been announced by Trump. But it will have an immediate impact on the computer, smart device, electronics, automotive, kitchenware and many other industries that require chips to function.
It is also very bad news for Malaysia because semiconductor and electronic equipment is the country's largest export to the United States. Last year, $23.68 billion (~RM 100 billion) was exported to America in this category. Of this amount, $16.2 billion (~RM 68.5 billion) is chips, which is equivalent to 20% of total US semiconductor imports in 2024.
