Discarded Vape Pens Recycled As Web Servers

The government recently announced that the sale of vape pens will be completely banned in Malaysia, with several states such as Perlis, Melaka and Selangor already taking their own initiatives to curb the sale of the product.

Not only is it harmful to health, the sale of these vape pens, especially the disposable models, usually leads to an increase in the amount of digital waste, especially with many vape pens today also coming with USB Type-C charging capabilities and even a built-in digital screen display.

Recently, an engineer named Bogdan Ionescu, better known as BogdanTheGeek, took a used vape pen and turned it into a server that can host a simple website.

The vape device he uses comes with a PY32F002B chip that also houses 24kB of storage and 3kB of memory and it is enough to host a website post, which is how he modified the vape pen components to become a simple web server machine.

After several modifications including physical and programming code, he has managed to enable this “server machine” to display post posts over the internet network in just 160ms.

If you are interested in seeing if you can convert your used vape pen to be converted into a web server machine, Bogdan has uploaded the source code for this project on his GitHub page.
