Disney has now announced that they will acquire a 2% equity stake in the leading online comics platform, Webtoon. For your information, Webtoon is a comics service under Naver based in South Korea, and offers various comics under them, including those published by artists themselves through the platform.
In parallel with this investment, the two companies will also come with a new service that will offer Disney's full comic catalog. Disney has more than 35,000 comics under them, including popular titles under the Marvel and Star Wars series. With this new application, users will be able to access them all with just one subscription.
This move is seen as allowing Disney to continue to reach users through online platforms – one of the challenges experienced by Disney, which is gradually losing its users and fans due to various platforms and content offered online.
Webtoon itself has several popular services under them, and one of them is Wattpad which focuses on writing stories. Various stories published on Webtoon and Wattpad have also been adapted into TV series and films before.
