In conjunction with the launch of the Click Before Moving campaign organized by the Road Transport Department (JPJ), its Director, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli has confirmed that they will enforce the seat belt law for all individuals riding in private vehicles, including those sitting in the back seat of a car.
He said that JPJ will use the Click Before Moving campaign to give the public early exposure to the need for all passengers to wear seat belts when in a car, even if they are sitting in the back seat.
He did not give any final word on when this enforcement will happen, but for the foreseeable future, the JPJ will be giving reminders and warnings to those who do not follow this law about the obligation to wear seat belts when in a moving car.
When enforced, individuals who do not wear seat belts may be fined RM300 under the Motor Vehicles (Seat Belts and Child Restraint Systems) Act 1978 (amended 2019).
This follows the enforcement of seat belts in tour and express buses which has been enforced since 1 July 2025 for buses built after 2020, while buses built before that year will be given time to install seat belts on their seats.
