Sin Chew Newspaper Fined RM100,000 by MCMC for AI Flag Mistake

The Malaysian flag mistake generated by generative AI by Sin Chew Daily newspaper earlier this year became a hot topic with some labeling it an act of treason. After several months passed and the incident was gradually forgotten, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today imposed a fine of RM100,000 on Sin Chew Media Corporation Bhd for the mistake made

In a statement issued today, MCMC said the decision was taken after obtaining permission from the Attorney General's Chambers. The mistake made was uploading an incomplete image of the Jalur Gemilang to their digital site.

This incident reveals how the actions of media companies using generative AI to replace graphics departments that use human resources are not all positive. After the incident involving Sin Chew, the mistake on the Jalur Gemilang caused by AI has been repeated on several social media posts belonging to companies, politicians and individuals.

No matter how good the AI model you use, it is still not a substitute for more detailed humans in ensuring that the same mistake does not happen again.
