Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Supports APV Codec – Competitor to Apple ProRes for Android

Advanced Professional Video (APV) is a video codec developed by Samsung as a competitor to Apple ProRes. It is an open source codec that enables lossless professional video recording up to 8K with HDR10+ and log support on Android devices.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which was launched early this morning, is the first chip to support APV. Another advantage of APV is that the recorded video size is up to 10% smaller than ProRes without losing quality. With APV support directly on the 8 Elite Gen 5, it confirms that Samsung's next devices will use this flagship chip.

A few weeks ago, there were rumors that the Galaxy S26 series would be the first devices that can record AVP video. It is already supported by Android 16 and opens the way for other Android devices to be able to do so in the future. In addition, APV is also supported by YouTube, Blackmagicdesign, Adobe, Dolby, Arcvideo and Company3.
