Budget 2026: Government Focuses on ASEAN Power Grid Development

In the middle of this year, as the chair of the ASEAN grouping this year, the Malaysian government held the ASEAN-GCC-China summit, the Energy Transition Meeting to discuss the regional clean energy and digital innovation agenda.

Most recently, during the tabling of the 2026 Budget, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that Malaysia would focus on the development of the ASEAN Power Grid infrastructure to connect cross-border electricity grids to neighboring countries and strengthen regional energy trade.

In this regard, Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Petronas will work with other ASEAN partners to accelerate the development of the Vietnam-Malaysia-Singapore power grid to supply additional energy resources from southern Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore.

This project has been signed since the middle of this year during the ASEAN summit in the middle of this year, which shows that the development of sustainable energy technology is something that can be done in the Southeast Asian region, and is capable of supplying sufficient amounts of electricity for these three countries.
