Football Association of Malaysia Content Website Hacked by Ransomware Attack

Last week, it was reported that seven naturalized players of “Malaysian descent” were barred from participating in any FIFA-sanctioned football competition or event due to concerns that the naturalization documents they provided were fake.

The matter is being talked about not only in Malaysia, but around the region as well, to the point that the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) website was hacked today. The FAM CMS (Competition Management System) website has been hacked and all pages under this CMS sub-domain are currently inaccessible.

The FAM CMS website is a website where details related to all football competitions under the auspices of the Football Association of Malaysia are displayed, from the Malaysia Premier Football League, President’s Cup, Youth Cup and others, including team names, starting lineups, match scores, cards given and even the names of the scorers.

Initial findings have shown that the hackers may have used ransomware to hack the CMS site, and have demanded $7000 (~RM30,000) as a condition for the safe return of all systems and content of the CMS platform.

Not only that, a Google search for CMS FAM returns a search for the website with notes about a conspiracy to manufacture fake ICs regarding the “descendant” status and naturalization of recent Malaysian imported players.

So far, it seems that the ransom payment notice has been deleted, but access to the websites under CMS FAM is still not accessible. For now, the main website of the Football Association of Malaysia is still accessible without problems.
