In conjunction with the recent launch of the Oppo A6 Pro and several local media partners had the opportunity to participate in an exclusive interview session with MediaTek Malaysia representatives including the Head of Asia Representative. This session opened up a space to understand more deeply about the company's current developments in addition to reviewing the collaboration with Oppo and the role of technology in improving the performance of the latest devices. Here is the full interview with them.


Question: What is the main reason MediaTek wants to work closely with Oppo in the development of processor chips?

MediaTek: At MediaTek, we always prioritize user feedback. This information helps us develop better systems and technologies that meet current needs. To ensure strong and continuous growth, we closely cooperate with like-minded industry partners.


Oppo emerged as the right partner. They openly share user information and support our efforts to adapt technology to be more relevant and effective. This collaboration allows us to improve product quality and provide a better user experience.


Question: Can you briefly explain the important role of processor chips in the development of future mobile smartphones?

MediaTek: Processor chips play a key role in determining the performance and capabilities of a mobile phone. In future development, we focus on various market segments with different needs.


In general, we identify three main categories: the flagship segment, the premium segment, and the entry-level segment. Each of these segments meets the needs of different user groups and requires a specific technology approach.


We start technology development from the flagship segment because innovation usually starts here. This segment serves as an initial platform to test the market acceptance of new technologies.


It also allows us to create truly unique and high-impact solutions. After that, we collect information from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to understand the real needs of customers. Based on this feedback, we adapt the technology to suit other segments.


This process involves market research, user surveys and discussions with customers, studios and developers. We will continue to use this approach in the future. We will work closely with customers and EMS developers to develop new technologies and adapt them to the needs of each market segment.


Question: In conjunction with the launch of Oppo A6 Pro, can you share what are the main things that MediaTek is focusing on for mobile gaming users (MGA)? Is it related to the cooling system, network connectivity, game smoothness or graphics?

MediaTek: We focus on various important aspects in improving the mobile gaming experience (MGA). All elements such as game smoothness, network stability, energy efficiency and graphics quality are combined in our technology platform called HyperEngine.


HyperEngine technology is designed to ensure smooth and stable games while optimizing power consumption. We pay special attention to network connectivity because we realize that network disruptions can affect the user experience. Therefore, smooth gameplay and network stability are two of the main focuses in the development of this technology.


Graphics quality also plays an important role, but the level of priority depends on the target market segment. For graphics and artificial intelligence (AI) related technologies, we start development from the leading segments first before adapting it for other segments.


Question: Does MediaTek plan to develop a laptop chip that can compete with Snapdragon in the high-performance category?

MediaTek: Thank you for the question. Our main focus at MediaTek is the development of chips for smartphones. This area is our top priority, and we continue to strengthen our position through innovation and strategic partnerships.


The smartphone market shows great potential with continued demand. Therefore, we are fully devoting our resources and expertise to developing chips that meet the needs of users in this segment.


Although we have not specifically focused on laptop chips so far, we also support other sectors such as the Internet of Things (IoT), smart devices and industrial applications. The chips we develop are flexible and can be customized according to the needs of each industry.


Question: What sets the Oppo and MediaTek collaboration apart from other brands that also use MediaTek processing chips?

MediaTek: MediaTek and Oppo have been working together for more than two decades. During that time, we have built strong technical compatibility and supported each other in product design and development. We not only supply high-performance processors, but also work closely with Oppo in the process of improving device capabilities.


What sets this partnership apart from other brands is the level of integration and technology customization we do together. Oppo sends a dedicated team of engineers to work directly with us. They carefully tune the processor performance to ensure it performs at an optimal level according to the needs of the device and the targeted user experience.


While many other brands also use MediaTek processors, each original equipment manufacturer (OEM) has its own approach. We provide flexible and powerful processors, but the final result depends on how the OEM leverages the technology. Oppo uses their expertise and customization methods to uniquely enhance the processor performance, resulting in faster, smoother and more responsive devices.


Question: What is Oppo’s main focus when working with MediaTek?

MediaTek: Oppo focuses on mobile gaming performance (gaming). They are committed to offering the best gaming experience to users and this is the foundation of our partnership.


We understand Oppo’s priorities and tailor the performance of our chips to meet their expectations. In every development, we ensure that the chips used by Oppo are optimized first so that they can achieve the highest performance levels in the gaming segment.


Question: Does MediaTek support self-development initiatives such as software simulation or experimental applications?

MediaTek: At present, we are not focusing on self-development initiatives such as software simulation. Our main focus is on developing processing chips that meet industry standards and can be widely used in a wide range of devices.


We work with partners with strong reputations and ensure that our technology supports large-scale applications and commercial use. While we appreciate the interest in self-development, each chip we produce needs to go through a strict quality control process to be suitable for industrial use. Therefore, we do not directly support self-development initiatives at this time.


Question: What are the main challenges in adapting processing chips to various technologies such as GPUs, CPUs and system architectures?

MediaTek: Each of our processing chips combines key components such as GPUs, CPUs and complex system architectures. Our main challenge is to ensure that all these elements work in harmony and support each other to meet the needs of modern technologies and applications.


We also adapt the chip architecture to support innovations such as smart photography, high-graphics gaming and artificial intelligence. To achieve this goal, we comprehensively evaluate performance, energy efficiency and technology compatibility so that each chip produced can provide a smooth and powerful user experience.


Question: The Oppo A6 Pro is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chip. In a highly competitive mid-range market, what are the key innovations that make this device stand out?

MediaTek: The Oppo A6 Pro is one of the first devices in the mid-range segment to fully utilize our HyperEngine technology. Previously, this technology was only available in flagship devices. With the Dimensity 6300, we have successfully expanded the use of HyperEngine by working closely with game developers to ensure optimal compatibility and performance.


Among the main advantages offered include low power consumption and stable gaming performance. The most prominent feature is the ability to maintain high frame rates continuously, which we know as sustained FPS.


The industry has previously emphasized high frame rates such as 120FPS or 144FPS, but the real challenge is maintaining that rate for a long period of time. In internal tests, this processing chip managed to maintain 120FPS for more than three hours depending on the type of game. In fact, in some extreme tests, the performance remained stable for a full five hours, starting from full battery until empty.


This performance depends on the level of graphics support and the type of game, but this achievement proves that the Dimensity 6300 not only offers high performance, but is also able to maintain it consistently in the mid-range segment.


Question: What is MediaTek's approach in selecting technology for flagship and premium products?

MediaTek: We prioritize technology selection based on the specific needs of each product to be launched. For the flagship and premium segments, we carefully evaluate the most suitable CPU and GPU technologies to support high performance. We also select industry partners who are able to optimally utilize these technologies so that each chip developed can provide added value to users. This strategic approach, which includes partner selection and technology adaptation, is the foundation for our chipset success in the global market.


Question: The Oppo A6 Pro is equipped with a 6500mAh battery. How does MediaTek optimize power consumption without compromising device performance?


MediaTek: A 6500mAh battery is ideal for supporting intensive use such as mobile gaming and video streaming. However, a large battery capacity alone is not enough. The chipset plays a key role in intelligently and efficiently managing power consumption.


MediaTek has developed technology that allows manufacturers to fully utilize the battery capacity. Through the combination of the Dimensity 6300 chip and Hyper Engine technology, we ensure that high performance can be maintained over the long term without generating excessive heat or compromising graphics quality.


The chipset adjusts the operation of the CPU and GPU according to current needs, to maintain consistently high frame rates. This approach allows users to enjoy a smooth and stable gaming experience for hours even with intensive graphics.


MediaTek is not just a processor supplier, but we ensure that the technology we develop can maximize the potential of large-capacity batteries such as 6500mAh through efficient power management and intelligent thermal control.


Question: How does MediaTek convince consumers to switch to their processor, given the dominance of other brands in the market?

MediaTek: We acknowledge that other brands such as Snapdragon have a strong influence among consumers. However, we have seen positive changes in recent years. MediaTek now dominates the entry-level and mid-range segments and more and more flagship devices are using our processor.


We believe that real-world performance is the key determinant of consumer trust. Therefore, we conduct extensive testing with device developers and manufacturers to ensure that our chips provide the best experience. We are also expanding our presence in markets outside of China, including Southeast Asia and India.


Our strategy is to widely introduce technologies such as Hyper Engine and prove to consumers that MediaTek's processor chips are not only comparable but also outperform major competitors in terms of efficiency and performance.


Question: What are MediaTek's steps in expanding its influence in the Southeast Asian market?

MediaTek: Southeast Asia is not just a new market for us, but a strategic field full of opportunities. Countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are a key focus due to their rapid technological growth and unique usage patterns.


We don’t just observe from afar. We go out into the field to understand the local network needs, user behavior and tech culture. With this information, we tailor our processing chips to be truly compatible with the digital lifestyle in the region.
