The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched an investigation into the Archive.Today site used to bypass paid site content. A subpoena has been sent to the Tucows domain registrar in Canada to identify the owner and operator of the site.
The FBI did not say whether a crime had been committed and only made inquiries to begin an investigation. In addition to bypassing content locked behind subscription fees, it also records changes made to government-owned websites.
For site operators, the service offered by Archive.is is a loss because the content can be read by anyone without the proper payment. At the same time, it is also a source for accessing content that is blocked by the government for certain reasons.
