MCMC to be asked to identify telecommunications companies that charge extra for scam protection services

The Communications Minister today said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will be asked to identify telecommunications companies that charge extra for scam protection services. This is in response to one telecommunications company charging RM10 for scam protection services.

This comment came from the Communications Minister, following the Consumers and Cyber Security Experts Association questioning the matter being promoted and sold by telecommunications companies. It was stressed that scam protection should be borne by telecommunications companies and not become a new source of profit.

The Minister said the MCMC would be asked to look into the matter, and determine whether or not it is appropriate to impose the additional charge. We may hear more about this matter in the coming weeks.
