Steam Frame VR Headset Announced With Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

The Steam Frame VR headset was also announced earlier this morning along with the new Steam Machine and Steam Controller. The Steam Frame is a headset marketed to compete with the Meta Quest as the VR headset of choice for gamers.

The Steam Frame works independently without the need for a connection to a PC or console. It uses the SteamOS 3 operating system, is equipped with dual LCD screens with a resolution of 2160 x 2160 pixels, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, 16GB LPDDR5X memory, up to 1TB of storage and a 21.6 Wh battery.

On the outside there are four cameras for spatial tracking, two more cameras on the inside to track eye movements and an IR emitter for seeing in the dark. There is a motion detection sensor to track the user's movements.

The battery pack is placed in the head to balance the weight at the front. Each Steam Frame weighs 440g. Also included are four speakers, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 support.

The Steam Frame is designed to be played with two controllers, sharing many of the same elements as the Steam Controller, except that the handle has a capacitive sensor that detects four fingers. It supports haptic feedback and only requires a single AA battery cell, which offers 40 hours of use. The Steam Frame will go on sale next year, but pricing has not yet been announced.
