Valve Gives Reasons Why Steam Deck 2 Isn't Coming Yet

Valve today unveiled three new products for gamers, including the Steam Machine PC console, the Steam Frame VR headset, and the new Steam Controller. One device that has many wondering is where the long-awaited Steam Deck 2 console is?

IGN spoke to Valve about the matter, and according to Pierre-Loup Griffais, a software developer at the company, Valve is said to be waiting for the right time to develop and launch the product.

Steam Deck 2 will launch in the future, but the main constraint it has shown so far is that there is no SoC (System on a Chip) chip that meets Valve's current needs for them to launch such a console.

According to the same spokesperson, Valve is not looking for a mere 20-50 percent IPC increase for the Steam Deck 2 console, but is instead looking for a dramatic performance boost, perhaps with the same impact as what AMD showed when they launched the AMD Ryzen Z1/Z1 Extreme processors early last year.

The Steam Machine is said to be six times more powerful than the existing Steam Deck offering, powered by a custom AMD “Aerith” processor chip designed specifically for the console. The Steam Machine reportedly comes with a variant of the AMD Strix Point processor chip, which is a combination of the AMD ZEN 4 processor chip and the RDNA 3 graphics chip.
