BYD Knocks Down a Betel Tree to Prove the Strength of its Roof

BYD is the world's largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer. Their vehicles now dominate the market previously held by Tesla and in Malaysia their EVs have also received encouraging reception. They like to use gimmicks to sell vehicles such as the U9 that can jump and the U8 that can float like a ship. To promote the Yangwang U8L, the gimmick used was to knock down a betel tree on the roof.

A betel tree was dropped several times on the front roof near the driver of the U8L. The roof integrity remained intact with only a small dent in the roof while the side mirrors and sunroof glass were also not broken. After three tree trunks hit the roof, the driver's door could still be opened and the vehicle driven.

The U8L has been on sale in China since August with a starting price of RMB 1.3 million (~RM 755,00). It is marketed as a luxury EV SUV comparable to a Rolls-Royce Cullinan. This test is a bit strange because it is rarely done but is very relevant for users, especially in Malaysia where there are many incidents of trees and structures falling on cars, trapping passengers.
