Michał Kiciński, co-founder of Good Old Games (GOG) and CD PROJEKT, has purchased 100% of GOG shares held by CD PROJEKT. With this, the video game sales platform that Kiciński founded with Marcin Iwiński in 2008 is now fully owned by Kiciński.
GOG was sold to Kiciński for PLN 90.7 million (~RM 102.4 million) and it will continue to operate independently from now on. Under the new ownership, GOG is determined to continue selling DRM-free video games, ensuring that classic games can be played on modern PCs and featuring more new retro-inspired games by 2026.
Despite the change of ownership, CD PROJEKT RED's published games such as The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 will still be offered through the GOG store. The video game sales platform was launched in 2008 to offer original games to users in Poland at more affordable prices by CD PROJEKT. At that time, pirated games were rampant in Poland.
GOG offered original games at comparable or sometimes lower prices than pirated ones, while supporting developers and allowing original versions with Polish language support to be offered.
It is now an alternative platform to Steam and Epic Games, with buyers not having to worry that after downloading a game, it would no longer be accessible because the DRM anti-piracy system had expired or was no longer operational.
