Prime Video Pulls Back AI-Powered Language Translation Feature After Criticism

Earlier last week, Prime Video quietly introduced an AI-powered language translation feature for anime content in English and Spanish. Anime fans realized that the results of this language translation system were very unsatisfactory with voice intonations that sounded awkward. Today, Prime Video officially pulled back this AI Beta feature from their platform.

The two content that used AI language translation are Banana Fish and No Game No Life Zero with English and Latin American Spanish options. In Malaysia, only Banana Fish can use this feature with Spanish audio options. Prime Video's use of AI has been criticized because the Banana Fish series has never been officially offered in English before.

The use of generative AI in film and TV series production has been increasing this year. Netflix admitted to using it to create special effects in the series The Eternauts and to change the actors' lip movements when the language is different from the original content.
