Proton to Launch First Hybrid Car in 2026

At the Proton Tech Showcase event today, Proton shared plans to use the AMA 2026 Enhance platform. The AMA (Advanced Modular Architecture) platform is a new platform developed with Geely to target the local market and the ASEAN region.

It was first used on the new Proton Saga launched last month, codenamed AMA 01. Through AMA 2026 Enhance, Proton also emphasized that this platform is ready to support hybrid vehicles.

AMA 2026 Enhanced will begin to be used on models codenamed AMA 02 and onwards. This enhanced platform allows for the integration of a hybrid engine system, with the 1DHT engine developed by Geely and to be assembled in Tanjung Malim. The engine not only supports a regular hybrid system but can also be used for plug-in hybrids (PHEV).

This hybrid engine is equipped with a battery of up to 3kW which can save petrol consumption of around 3.5 to 3.9 liters per 100km, in addition to producing power of up to 130kW with torque of 240Nm. At the same time, the AMA 2026 Enhanced platform is being developed with a target of a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating and will support level 2 self-driving technology.

At the Proton Tech Showcase event, Proton also showcased their future car model, a plug-in hybrid car developed using the GMA platform, similar to the Proton e.MAS 7. For now, no detailed information has been revealed, but it is expected that this will be Proton's first plug-in hybrid car to be announced next year as part of its efforts to respond to the energy transition agenda.
