Customs Inspections Now Consolidated at KLIA T1 Departure Gate

The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) has consolidated the inspection of travellers leaving Malaysia at the departure gate of Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA T1). This measure has been implemented since 1 January 2026 to ensure a more orderly and smooth flow of passenger movement.

With the implementation of the new layout, passenger waiting times can be reduced and the flow of movement becomes smoother. In addition, this initiative supports efforts to improve the efficiency of KLIA T1 operations and strengthen security levels without compromising customs enforcement.

These improvements are implemented through close collaboration between the Ministry of Transport (MOT), JKDM, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS). MOT stressed that this combination does not compromise security, but rather checks on passengers and goods continue to be strengthened through compliance with mutually agreed procedures.

This measure also improves the passenger experience, speeds up the boarding process and ensures that KLIA T1 operations run more safely and are organized in line with international airport best practices. However, any attempt to bring out illegal items will still be dealt with sternly.

Previously, screening was carried out using ‘Departure Screening’ scanners in the departure zone after immigration. This layout has the potential to cause congestion, especially during peak travel times.
