Universal Music Group Partners with NVIDIA to Develop Responsible AI

Universal Music Group (UMG) today announced a partnership with NVIDIA to pioneer the development of artificial intelligence (AI) responsible for music discovery, creation and engagement. Through the partnership, NVIDIA’s AI infrastructure and UMG’s catalog of millions of songs will be used to train the AI.

This is the second time UMG has partnered with a generative AI company after signing an agreement with Splice in December last year. Previously, UMG, along with Sony and Warner Music Group, filed a lawsuit against music generative AI companies such as Suno, alleging that AI models were trained on songs owned by their artists without proper permission and compensation.

In addition to developing more responsible AI, the partnership also aims to make it easier for users to search for music through NVIDIA’s Music Flamingo model. The collaboration will also be carried out with artists to create generative music generation tools that do not produce AI garbage output.
