Wikipedia is now 25 years old and a quarter of a century since its launch on 15 January 2001, the Malay Wikipedia now has 435,698 articles since the project began in October 2022 with 9 million visits per month. This is an increase from the 400,000 articles published as we reported in January 2025.
The Malay Wikipedia now has over 400 editors who maintain quality. In total, there are an average of 1,276 Malaysian contributors each month who make almost 53,000 edits.
Local Wikimedia volunteers in Malaysia are also involved in the Wikikata Project which
documents and preserves endangered indigenous languages such as Iban, Kadazandusun and others on Wiktionary. In October 2024, the initiative received the international upgrade of the 2024 International Green Gown Award and was recognized in the RCE Awards.
Through this collaborative program, Malaysians contribute to the preservation of their cultural identity and ensure that their culture continues to live on in the global ecosystem, not just stored in old books.
Happy birthday to Wikipedia. In the same 25 years it has had a reputation as a site with unreliable facts but has now become a library of worldly knowledge that is being sought after by artificial intelligence (AI) companies to train various AI models and is being followed by Grokipedia.
