Earlier this week, Elon Musk aimed to build a base on the surface of the moon within 10 years. This is a change from his original goal of building a colony on the surface of Mars. The base on the surface of the moon will be used as an AI data center site to process the necessary computing needs.
Yesterday, Elon Musk shared some more visions of the future of xAI and it seems that the base on the moon will also become a factory to build AI satellites. Once completed, these AI satellites will be launched into orbit using a mass driver machine that "launches" cargo.
SpaceX does not have this technology but the company SpinLaunch has been testing it since 2021. The cargo will be rotated in a circular vacuum chamber to high speeds before being launched like Thor's hammer into orbit. The SpinLaunch idea has received the attention of NASA with China also interested in using the same technology to send cargo from the moon back to Earth.
The satellite launch system does not require rockets and SpaceX can launch AI satellites into orbit quickly, assisted by the moon's gravity, which is not as strong as on Earth.
