NVIDIA Sells Last of Arm Shares

Around 2020, NVIDIA had expressed its intention to buy semiconductor chip designer Arm for $40 billion and had purchased a large stake in the company in preparation for the takeover. However, issues such as market monopoly and anti-competitiveness have buried those ambitions.

Since then, NVIDIA has been gradually selling off its Arm stake, and according to the latest report, they have finally sold off their remaining stake in full. A total of 1.1 million shares were sold, worth $155 million, bringing its stake down to zero.

This means that Softbank still remains the majority owner of Arm with about 90 percent of the shares. In 2020, Softbank agreed to sell all of its stakes to NVIDIA, but various parties, especially anti-competition bodies in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, blocked the acquisition, and it was canceled in 2022.

Although NVIDIA has sold all of its stakes, the 20-year agreement signed that allowed NVIDIA to use Arm technology and patents is still in effect. NVIDIA's data center and AI processing chips, in particular the Grace and Vera models, are built on Arm processing chips.
