Seedance 2.0 Begins Blocking Videos That Infringe Intellectual Property

Less than a week after its launch, Bytedance has begun to restrict its generative video AI Seedance 2.0 from generating videos that infringe intellectual property. This comes after Bytedance received criticism from SAG-AFTRA, MPAA, Disney and the Japanese cabinet.

Seedance 2.0 went viral on social media through videos showing Tom Cruise fighting Tom Cruise and Dragonball characters boxing with Doraemon. The MPAA was the first to overrule Bytedance in blocking content from Hollywood generated by generative AI. Disney later sent a similar warning letter after videos featuring Star Wars and Disney characters began appearing on social media.

Bytedance's move is similar to what OpenAI did after Sora was launched and it received criticism from intellectual property owners. But after that, OpenAI signed a deal with Disney to license the characters and made a $1 billion investment. At this time, Bytedance has not announced any agreement to license Seedance 2.0, which can only be accessed using Doubao and Dreamina.
