WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram Blocked in Russia

Three social media platforms owned by Meta, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, have now been officially blocked in Russia. All three services have been removed from the directory of Roskomnadzor, which oversees internet services in the country. No reason was given, but the Russian government is working to move all users of foreign services to use the Max app, which is similar to WeChat but for local residents.

Facebook and Instagram can now only be accessed in Russia via VPN. WhatsApp confirmed that they were being blocked by Russian authorities and are working to restore service immediately. In addition to the three Meta apps, access to YouTube has also been reported to be affected since today.

Russia is in the process of banning foreign social media and communication apps that are alleged to pose security risks, are used for terrorist purposes and spread foreign agendas.
