Printers require drivers to function properly. If you're still using a printer that's more than 10 years old, using it on a Windows 11 computer will be difficult because it will no longer be supported.
Microsoft has officially ended support for V3 and V4 printer drivers used by legacy devices. All Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 computers will no longer be able to update their printer drivers using Windows Update. Support is being discontinued because older drivers have stability issues, pose security risks, and increase the maintenance burden.
Despite the end of support, Microsoft says the majority of Windows 11 users are not affected because modern printers support the new software architecture. If you encounter problems, driver updates can still be done manually through the printer manufacturer's website.
The end of support was not sudden as Microsoft announced it in September 2023. Sufficient time has been given to printer manufacturers and owners.
With the Windows 11 architecture, printers can work without the owner installing special drivers and software produced by the manufacturer. This makes the printer experience on Windows 11 easier and more convenient.
