Subscribers of the Wondery podcast app have begun receiving notices that the app will be shut down. Wondery+ subscribers are being asked to move to the Audible platform, which is also a podcast app owned by Amazon, if they want to continue enjoying Wondery content. Although the notice has been sent, Amazon has not given a final date for when the app will be shut down.
The app's closure was predicted after Amazon laid off 100 Wondery employees last year. Amazon insists that the studio will not be closed and that it will focus on podcast content from celebrities and well-known personalities. Today, Amazon is also launching a more affordable Audible plan that is comparable to Wondery+'s most affordable plan.
Wondery was acquired by Amazon in 2020 and placed under Amazon Music. Previously, Sony and Apple were also reported to be interested in acquiring Wondery. Wondery is a podcast network that publishes popular series “Dirty John,” “Dr. Death,” “Business Wars,” and “The Shrink Next Door.”
