Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an artificial intelligence (AI) company for filmmakers founded by Ben Affleck in 2022. InterPositive is not a generative AI company but instead builds models that are used to assist in the post-production process.
Among the things that InterPositive can do is perform color, audio and lighting adjustments on daily footage of a shooting session. It can also add special effects when needed. Unlike other AI models, InterPositive generates AI models using footage that has been previously recorded by humans for a production.
These models will only be used specifically for that production and not for other productions. The service offered by InterPositive is similar to that offered by Adobe Firefly Custom Models, which also allows customers to train AI models using only their own media assets.
Previously, in an interview promoting the film The Rip, Affleck was quoted as saying that existing AI does not take into account the input and views of filmmakers and does not understand the real challenges of production. InterPositive operates with a workflow that still takes in information from the director and director of photography with elements still controlled by humans.
Netflix has already experimented with the use of AI in the production of their own series with The Eternauts last year. The special effects of Eternauts were created using AI to reduce production costs. AI tools such as those developed by InterPositive are seen as being able to reduce production costs
