OpenAI and Anthropic are two fiercely competing artificial intelligence (AI) companies. OpenAI may be more well-known, but Anthropic has more business and professional customers thanks to Claude’s capabilities. This is a huge blow to OpenAI because Anthropic founder Dario Amodei was their former vice president of research.
The Financial Times reported that OpenAI, which currently has around 4,500 employees, plans to have 8,000 employees by the end of 2026, an increase of almost 80%. This is to allow the company to add more business customers to compete with Anthropic. Most of the new hires will be focused on sales, product development, engineering and research.
In a situation where technology companies are laying off tens of thousands of employees on the grounds that tasks can be replaced by AI, AI companies are adding staff in areas that they claim no longer need human workers.
