Airwallex is a digital financial platform used by a variety of small and medium-sized companies that want to facilitate the acceptance of payments and money from various different markets, whether from the Asia Pacific, the Asian region or globally.
Malaysia is one of the fastest growing digital economy markets in Southeast Asia, where the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector accounts for 40 percent of the country’s gross domestic product.
Many Malaysian companies also have the ability to enter overseas markets, but face difficulties when it comes to supporting foreign currencies, especially when receiving payments or paying local suppliers and employees in those markets.
Airwallex recently received a Class A Financial Services Business License from Bank Negara Malaysia, which allows Airwallex to offer a variety of new services that are seen as helping local companies scale their businesses to overseas markets faster and easier.
Airwallex will soon enable Malaysian businesses to:
Complete digital onboarding through a streamlined experience
to access Airwallex’s full global product range
Receive, store and manage funds through multi-currency wallets
Easily convert currencies on the platform with competitive FX rates
Transfer money worldwide through fast transfers
Issuance of corporate Visa cards and control spending with integrated spending management tools
To date, Airwallex has helped local brands such as Applecumby and Whimsigirl expand their businesses overseas, and together with many other local companies, they have processed RM2 billion in remittance transactions in 2025 alone, and expect that figure to continue to grow throughout the year.
According to Airwallex, receiving a Class A Financial Services Business License allows companies to hold up to RM500,000 in their company’s digital wallet, a figure set by Bank Negara.
Airwallex Malaysia has been operating in Malaysia for the past two to three years, and recently, they have also doubled their headcount to 166 people last year, and that number is expected to double this year.
Airwallex’s expansion in Malaysia builds on Airwallex’s broader investments in Southeast Asia, combining full regulatory approval with an AI-powered financial infrastructure designed to support local businesses.
