My problem with the modern world of movies and series is that those who have seen them will upload “spoilers” on social media without thinking about others who haven’t had the chance to watch them themselves. YouTube’s algorithm, for example, will show spoiler videos because I’ve seen the trailer. I immediately lose interest in watching and the loser is the creator of the movie.
In Japan, a man was jailed for 20 months and fined 1 million Yen (~RM RM25,00) for writing spoilers for the movie Godzilla Minus 1 and the anime Overlord III without the permission of the copyright holder. This unnamed man not only revealed spoilers but the full plot, all the storylines, every scene and what the characters did in order to make a profit from advertising on his website. That’s why his actions are seen as violating Japan’s strict copyright laws.
The offense was committed between January 2023 and February 2024, with him being arrested by police on October 10, 2024. He was arraigned at the Tokyo District Court on April 16, with the sentence handed down on the same day. This is the first time an individual has been sentenced for fully revealing the plot and storyline of an anime film or series in Japan.
