The selling price of the new PlayStation 5 console for the Malaysian market has finally been announced by Sony after the price in Japan, the UK and the United States began to be increased earlier this month. The price of RAM and storage has increased sharply due to the high demand for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, causing the price to increase five years after its launch, instead of getting cheaper as usual.
The selling price of the Sony PlayStation 5 in Malaysia is as follows.
Model Old Price New Price Price Difference
PlayStation 5 Digital Edition RM 2069 RM 2499 RM 400
PlayStation 5 Standard
RM 2499 RM 2799 RM 300
PlayStation 5 Pro RM 3849 RM 3999 RM 150
PlayStation Portal RM 999 RM 1099 RM 100
The selling price in Malaysia is comparable to the selling price in the UK but more expensive than in the United States and Japan. The selling price in Japan is indeed lower because it is Sony's home country and the largest market for PlayStation consoles.
The PS5 price increase is also in line with the increase in the price of smartphones sold in Malaysia since the beginning of this year. The RAM crisis is only expected to be resolved as early as 2028 as there are still many mega AI data centers to be built this year and next year.
