Tesla AI5 Chip Physical Design Revealed

Elon Musk today announced that Tesla's latest AI processing chip, called the Tesla AI 5, has finally passed the taping out phase, or physical design before it is sent to semiconductor chip manufacturers such as TSMC, Intel or Samsung for mass production.

The Tesla AI 5 processing chip was shown by Elon Musk, showing the chip's components in the center, and surrounded by memory chips manufactured by SK Hynix. Each memory module is seen to come with 16GB of LPDDR5X memory, and each AI5 chip will come with 12 of these modules, making the total memory on this chip 192GB.

Elon Musk previously said that each Tesla AI5 processing chip comes with the processing power of an NVIDIA Hopper chip, and the combination of these two processing chips gives it the same capabilities as an NVIDIA Blackwell chip.

Tesla will use the services of both Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Samsung Foundry to produce the Tesla AI5 processing chip to speed up the chip production process and not rely on just one company.

The Tesla AI5 chip will also power the computers in the Robotaxi self-driving vehicle and Optimus robot, which we are likely to see mass production in the next six months to a year.
