Batang Lupar Bridge Opens – Longest River Crossing in Malaysia

The Batang Lupar Bridge No. 1 connecting Sebuyau and Maludam in Sarawak was officially opened by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas on Thursday. With a length of around 4.8 km across the Batang Lupar River, it is now the longest river crossing bridge in Malaysia, surpassing the Johor River Bridge (1.7 km). The record for the longest bridge in Malaysia is still held by the 24 km Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge connecting Bandar Cassia (Batu Kawan) in Seberang Perai with Batu Maung in Penang.

It is part of the Second Coastal Road & Main Road Network Programme, aimed at improving connectivity of coastal areas to major cities. Construction began in March 2021 with a project costing RM 848.75 million. With the opening of the bridge, the Sebuyau–Triso ferry service will be phased out. Before this bridge was built, local residents had been using ferry services for the past few decades.
