Instagram has removed the end-to-end encryption (E2EE) feature starting today, May 8, 2026. This E2EE feature is being removed because not many people use it when sending messages on the Instagram service. The original announcement of the withdrawal of this feature was made by Meta in March.
As an alternative, Meta is asking users to move to WhatsApp if they want to use E2EE support in messaging. Through full encryption support, other parties cannot read the messages sent, and they can only be read by the sender and recipient.
Previously, TikTok also confirmed that they will not support full encryption for messaging in their application. Local social application, Daun has also recently added messaging support.
