Netflix's ad-supported subscription plans have been available in 12 countries since 2022. Netflix now says it will be available in 15 more countries starting in 2027: Austria, Belgium, Colombia, Denmark, Indonesia, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and Thailand.
Although initially seen as a regressive plan due to the in-app ads, it has generated 2.5 times more revenue than in 2024. At the Netflix Upfront event yesterday, they also revealed that the ad-supported plan has 250 million subscribers compared to the 190 million announced last November.
In Southeast Asia, only Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand will receive ad-supported plans. This is likely because the higher population and lower value of the local currency make regular subscription plans too expensive.
The ad-supported plan displays 15-30 seconds of ads before and during the content being watched. On average, 5 minutes of ads will be displayed for every 1 hour of content watched. Video quality is limited to 720P only, download features are not provided, and not all Netflix content is accessible.
