The title above is long and may confuse your brain when reading it. But the truth is that an international online scam operation is now operating in Malaysia with victims located on a different continent. According to a report by The Star, this scam operation was carried out from a luxury bungalow in Gelang Patah, Iskandar Puteri and was disabled after the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) conducted a raid on May 14.
The main target was victims in Spain, using artificial intelligence (AI) to translate to disguise themselves and communicate in various languages. AI was used to translate Mandarin speech into English, and Spanish conversations into English to commit fraud.
A total of 35 Chinese suspects who were arrested in the raid acted as agents looking for victims on online platforms. The victims who were caught were offered non-existent jobs with lucrative salary offers through several fake job packages. Those who wanted higher salaries were forced to buy more expensive packages, before being completely scammed.
The advancement of AI technology has not only made the lives of ordinary users easier but is now also being used by criminals to facilitate their fraud. It has previously been reported that AI is being used to clone the voice of a victim before fake audio begging for help because of being kidnapped is sent to family members. The intelligence used may be fake, but the impact on society today is quite real.
