Sony Semiconductor and TSMC have just announced a collaboration to introduce a new imaging sensor for the Japanese technology company. According to a statement issued by Sony, the collaboration will combine Sony's expertise as an imaging sensor component designer and TSMC as a leading semiconductor chip manufacturer and process technology expert.
With this collaboration, Sony is expected to begin designing and producing new CMOS imaging sensor components using TSMC's process technology at Sony's newest factory located in Koshi city in Kumamoto prefecture. With this collaboration, the two companies will also discuss upgrading their imaging technology factory in Nagasaki, depending on market demand for Sony's imaging sensor components.
The collaboration is also expected to explore new opportunities that will emerge in physical AI applications, particularly in the automotive and robotics industries. This will pave the way for future innovation and further advance technological advancements.
So far, it has not been announced when the Koshi city factory will begin operating, and what type of semiconductor chip technology will be "borrowed" from Sony to build these imaging sensors.
