Acer And ASUS Now Allowed To Sell Computers In Germany Again

We previously reported that computer brands Acer and ASUS were not allowed to sell their computer products in the German market because they did not pay for Nokia's HEVC (H.265) video codec technology patent.

Now, it seems that both companies have confirmed that they can now continue to sell their computers in that market. Acer says that it will still sell both laptop models with and without the HEVC codec enabled on their computers. Customers who bought computers without the codec can purchase the codec and activate it themselves.

Details of Acer's settlement are unknown, but it is expected that they have paid Nokia for the right to enable the codec on their computers, allowing Acer to restore its sales rights.

ASUS is also now allowed to sell its computers with the HEVC codec, but for now, both ASUS and Nokia are still in discussions about how best to resolve the issue of using the codec, and Nokia appears to be dropping all lawsuits against ASUS in Germany.
