ChatGPT yesterday officially entered the group of apps with over 1 billion monthly active users (MAU) according to data shared by Sensor Tower. This happened around 3 years after the app was launched for iOS on May 19, 2023.
Much faster than TikTok (around 5 years), Instagram (7.7 years), YouTube (8.1 years), and Facebook (8.7 years). However, this increase in the number of users exceeding 1 billion is still behind OpenAI's original target which predicted it would happen by the end of 2025.
OpenAI is closely followed by Google Gemini which now has 900 million MAU as announced at Google I/O last month. Meanwhile, the Claude app, although it has not yet reached the 1 billion MAU mark, has recorded a faster increase in the number of users compared to ChatGPT. This may be the reason why Anthropic filed for their IPO privately yesterday earlier than OpenAI.
