The “Your Algorithm” feature, previously available on Reels and Explore, is now expanding to the main feed. Through it, users can see a list of topics identified by the system based on activity in the app. The list can be modified by adding topics of interest or removing irrelevant topics. Each change will help the system readjust the algorithm to be more in line with user interests.
Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, explained that this step is important because previously the main feed was often filled with suggestions from accounts that were not followed. These suggestions are effective in keeping users on the app longer, but at the same time reduce the ability of users to control their experience. With this feature, users can now tell the system what content they want to see. This feature also gives users more control to shape their own experience without relying entirely on the algorithm’s choices.
Mosseri also emphasized that this is just the beginning. After topics, users will likely be able to make choices based on mood, type of content and other aspects. The main goal is to give users more control while maintaining the shared experience that is the main attraction of social media.
