The new Malaysian International Passport was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim this morning with 94 security features. This is an increase from the 49 security features used on the current international passport. With this, the security of the national identity document has been strengthened and reduces the risk of forgery.
Among the 94 security features used on the new international passport are hologram elements, ultra-violet printing, security stitching threads, unique designs on each page and hidden elements. The launch ceremony was held at the Parliament lobby and was also attended by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Immigration Department Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban.
Although the new passport has been launched, the Malaysian Immigration Department reminds the public that existing passports are still valid for use up to six months before their expiry date. There is no obligation to make a new passport if the passport has not yet expired. For the initial phase, the new passport can be applied for at the Putrajaya Immigration Headquarters, Kuala Lumpur Passport Office at Jalan Duta, UTC Wangsa Maju and Shah Alam Immigration Office.
The application for this 5-year passport is RM200 per person. For senior citizens aged 60 and above, the fee is RM100.00 which is equivalent to a 50% discount. For persons with disabilities (OKU) aged 18 and above who are registered under the OKU Act 2008, as well as all officers and staff of the Malaysian Immigration Department, it can be applied for free without any fee. Earlier this month, the Federal Legislation under the Fees (Passport and Visa) (Amendment) Order 2026 was updated with Malaysian citizens being able to book passports valid for up to 10 years. The implementation of passport applications with a validity period of up to 10 years is expected to be announced in the near future.
