Norway Restricts Use of AI by School Students

The level of acceptance of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) varies between countries in the world. China has integrated AI in primary schools with teachers trained to use it as a tracking aid and to prevent cheating. In Europe, AI is seen as a destroyer of thinking ability with operating companies instructed to set age restrictions.

Norway, a country often seen as progressive in the use of technology for education, has placed limits on the use of AI by school students. Students aged 6-13 are completely prohibited from using it. Students aged 13-16 are allowed to use it under the supervision of class teachers. Finally, students aged 17-19 are advised to use AI only if necessary so that they are prepared for future students and work.

The steps taken by Norway are pragmatic and simple. Previously, Norway had banned the use of smartphones by school students to reduce screen time, while it was the first country to introduce the use of tablets in the classroom more than a decade ago.

Recent studies have found that the uncontrolled use of AI has an impact on creativity, critical thinking and remembering facts that need to be learned. AI users' brain activity was also found to decline, indicating "stupidity" if it was used all the time.
