The National Security Council (MKN) has clarified that the personal data currently circulating on social media is not a new leak but rather old data from incidents before 2022. This statement was issued in response to allegations that a leak has occurred involving the current platform. According to MKN, the dissemination of the information is believed to have resulted from an illegal system intrusion and is now being re-distributed without permission.
Following this, the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) stressed that distributing or providing access to data obtained through illegal means is an offence under Malaysian law, even if the site or service operates abroad. As an immediate measure, NACSA together with MyNIC and the Personal Data Protection Department (JPDP) have collaborated with overseas service providers to take down and block websites that disseminate the data in question. This measure was taken to ensure that the people's cybersecurity continues to be maintained and personal information is not misused.
At the same time, MKN advises the public not to use or access leaked data as such actions not only contribute to the spread of cybercrime but also violate national laws. The incident also highlights the need to strengthen the cybersecurity legal framework, including through the Cyber Crime Bill that will be tabled in Parliament to increase protection against increasingly complex digital threats.
