Qualcomm is one of the world's largest chipmakers, which produces chips for smartphones and laptops for both consumer and business use. Qualcomm is currently said to be in talks and considering buying a data center AI chip developer called Modular Inc.
Modular is an AI chip startup that was founded in 2022, and a few months ago was valued at $1.6 billion (~RM6.6 billion), and if Qualcomm is really serious about acquiring the company, it is expected that they will have to pay as much as $4 billion (~RM16 billion).
According to a Bloomberg report, Qualcomm is seen wanting to enter the data center and automotive chip manufacturing market more seriously, and the Modular acquisition is one of the biggest steps they can take to make it happen.
The discussions for this acquisition are expected to take several weeks, where both parties will discuss the value and terms of the acquisition. Bloomberg reports that for now, there is a possibility that Qualcomm may not be successful with this acquisition if Modular does not accept their offer.
