The deepfake problem has made it increasingly difficult to trust images and videos uploaded to social media. But more worryingly in the UK, police have launched an investigation after officers were found to have generated fake evidence in several criminal investigations.
The unnamed officer was with Derbyshire Police. Details of the evidence fabrication have not been released as the investigation is still in its early stages. The officers involved have been removed from frontline duty, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The investigation comes weeks after the head of the UK Police AI centre revealed that it had told several police forces to stop using AI systems to prepare court cases and other tasks because they were not yet fully reliable.
