EU Will Not Force Wearables to Have Replaceable Batteries

As we know, the European Union will enforce a law that requires electronic devices to come with batteries that can be easily replaced by the user starting February 18, 2027. Previously, we reported that the Nintendo Switch 2 will come with a console with a replaceable battery specifically for the region.

Recently, there has been a report that the law will not be tightened for all types of devices. Devices such as wearables, medical equipment, electronic toys, thermometers, rooftop telematics equipment and equipment used in explosive atmospheres will be exempt from this law.

The EU has listed accessories such as smartwatches, health trackers, smart glasses and other accessories used in clothing and other accessories as a category under wearable devices, meaning that they are exempt from the user-replaceable battery requirement.

However, it has also been reported that where possible, electronics brands selling their products in the EU will be required to have customer service that allows consumers to send in their electronics for battery replacement and repair.

In addition, improperly disposed of small lithium-ion batteries are causing an increase in fires at waste treatment plants. This must be considered before granting exemptions for products containing such batteries.
