As is well known, the Malaysian government has signed an agreement with semiconductor chip technology inventor Arm to share knowledge and license their technologies to make Malaysia one of the leading semiconductor chip manufacturing countries.
A few months ago, three local semiconductor companies received technology access tokens from Arm to empower and strengthen the country's capabilities in the industry of inventing and developing local integrated circuit technology.
Recently, four more local companies have reportedly received six more Arm technology access tokens, including three Arm Compute Subsystems tokens and three Arm Flexible Access tokens to enable these companies to build technology and strengthen their own intellectual property ownership.
YB Tuan Haji Akmal Nasrullah bin Haji Mohd Nasir, Minister of Economy said “By providing access to proven intellectual property and computing platforms, this initiative will help Malaysian companies shorten development times, reduce research and development (R&D) risks, and move faster towards commercial semiconductor product realization,” at the recent The Edge-HSBC E&E Symposium 2026.
He also said that the Malaysian government is working to get more technology companies to leverage this Malaysia-Arm collaboration to accelerate the product development process so that it is also faster and easier to commercialize in general.
Owning cutting-edge technology is one way in which Malaysian companies in particular can grow rapidly, and not be overly dependent on a few established industries.
